2015 -- NT Open
Most of you know that the Open was a thriller with Jacob Moore defeating Mark Conrad 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9 and 13-11 in the 7th set. What a match! We are very proud of their conduct and the standard of skill displayed.
We'd like to thank Elfrida Kalich, TY Lee, Jonothan Tong, Sonny Cartwright, Gavin and Mitchell Bedford for making the trip to Alice. It was great to see so much progress within the group. Unfortunately for the local women, Elfrida has also improved with a clean sweep over Linda Tsai, Karin Yeaman and Laurel Duffell!
Elfrida and TY Lee won the Open Doubles against Jacob Moore and Laurel Duffell in a five setter and Elfrida paired up with Karin Yeaman to defeat Linda Tsai and Laurel Duffell in the Women's Open Doubles in another thriller (11-5, 11-9, 10-12, 6-11, 13-11). TY defeated Elfrida in the Veteran's Final so it's good to see someone keep Elfrida in check!
Another great match was the Under 15 Final with Mitchell Bedford defeating Max Duffell:13-15, 12-10, 14-12, 7-11 and ... 15-13 in the final set.
There are so many wonderful opportunities for girls playing Table Tennis so it was great to see Sara Johnston, Shruti Soni and Dooryia Zeng play in their first TT tournament. Aaliyah Morgan and Khehoney Albina have also grown in confidence and focus since the intensive week of coaching with Alois Rosario. Aaliyah won the Girls Final against Khehoney and they have been training well since.
Other juniors playing in their first TT tournament included: Michael Harrison, Ankith Nair, Bobby Zeng, Brad Johnston, George Habib, Jack Jones, Josiah Butter, Bhavya Soni, Tommy Tran and Charlie Duffell. It was also great to see Nghia Truong back after a couple of years off and he is more than ready for regular competition. On a cute note, our youngest competitors, Charlie and Dooryia, surprised spectators with their long rallies.
Allan Duffell had his sight set on the B Grade final and he did not disappoint, defeating rival Karin Yeaman in four sets. Sonny Cartwright and Tommy Tran won a tight contest in the B Grade Doubles final against father and son, Gavin and Mitchell Bedford (11-8, 2-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5). Sonny also won the Restricted Final against Arvinder Juneja at the challenging end of the day.
Thanks to Alastair Sheriff for directing the tournament and thanks to those who helped set up, umpire, pack up, cook and bring food. Thanks also to Chuck Conrad and Adrian Butter for the quality photos (see the link on Facebook). It was great to see Graeme Shaughessy up for the tournament, despite his bung calf, but at least he made great strides in ticking items off the long list of organisation required for the Nationals, HERE IN ALICE SPRINGS, in 2016. Oh yeah, gulp, he also settled right back into doing a lot of work around the Club. Oops.
